![]() ![]() International adoption is a controversial matter in countries from which children are coming to the United States, but adoptive families have had little voice as yet in the debate. ![]() The book addresses many central questions about international adoption: why children are in need of adoption outside the country of their birth, why parents choose to adopt from other countries, and how parents and children of very different origins become a "real" family. In rich personal stories drawn from her own experience as the mother of two Korean-born daughters and from interviews with other parents and with adopted children from six to thirty, Cheri Register both affirms the normality of internationally adoptive families and highlights the special challenges they do indeed face. As natural and normal as it feels to them to be together, such families are often asked to explain their obvious difference. ![]() The question "Are those kids yours?" has a familiar ring to parents who have adopted children from South Korea, India, Colombia, the Philippines, and other countries. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Uhtred has always been a Dane at heart, and has always believed that given the chance, he would fight for the men who raised him and taught him the Viking ways. ![]() The Danish Vikings quickly invade and occupy three of England’s four kingdoms-and all that remains of the once proud country is a small piece of marshland, where Alfred and his family live with a few soldiers and retainers, including Uhtred, the dispossessed English nobleman who was raised by the Danes. This is the exciting-yet little known-story of the making of England in the 9th and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England’s four kingdoms.Īt the end of The Last Kingdom, The Danes had been defeated at Cynuit, but the triumph of the English is not fated to last long. The second installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)-the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit television series. ![]() ![]() ![]() From here on in, there will be some spoilers. ![]() Long story short: This story is amazing, the setting expanding, the plot complex yet easy to follow. I know now why it was so bland: whoever wrote the cover didn’t want to give anything away. Though Hardinge had written the excellent Fly by Night and I hungered for her to write another story, this plot did not engage me, based on what was written on the cover. I picked up this volume a few years ago, but the cover description was… bland at best. It’s going to be hard to write a full review without giving numerous spoilers. I could swim in this world, it’s so well constructed. ![]() Hardinge created such a lush world with so much wonder and grit, I despair of ever putting together a fictional setting nearly so fulfilling. The story pulls me along, and the second I finish reading, I have to write. Sometimes, as a writer, when I read a book filled with a compelling plot, an inventive and immersive world, and engaging characters, I’m inspired to create on my own. ![]() ![]() For more details, please consult the latest information provided by Royal Mail's International Incident Bulletin.
